One of the most striking results of the U.S. Census Bureau's American Community Survey published in September involved the poverty rate. Compared to the previous year, it rose to 14.3% of the population, a total of 43.6 million people. That means one in seven Americans lives in poverty. -
Hurricane Irene Scams
Silver Planet joins the FBI and others in reminding everyone to be careful about how they give to Hurricane Irene relief efforts. Hurricane Irene peaked as a Category 3 storm and hit the U.S. coast at Category 1 levels. Irene is being listed by some as one of the top ten most destructive hurricanes to hit the United States.
The American Red Cross is assisting relief efforts in 12 states affected by Irene. The storm has claimed at least 27 lives and the flooding may claim more. The Internet is filled with images of the massive storm's eye, reported to be 500 miles in diameter.
