Two Airlines Note Scam Activity

“Phishing” emails and fraudulent checks

By Susan Hindman

A recent scan of eight major airline sites showed that only two have posted scam alerts on their home pages: Delta and American.

Delta posted a “Check Fraud Alert” on it home page on April 1, 2009, warning that “fraudulent checks purporting to be from Delta have apparently been sent to consumers for various situations including Craig’s List job postings, Mystery Shopper, Sweepstakes/Promotional Draw Winner, and payment for items being sold. The checks generally are sent via UPS or FedEx.” The accompanying information tells the recipient that cash must be wired to cover either an overpayment for items purchased or payment for taxes and service fees.

If you have received one of these checks, do not cash or deposit it. “These checks did not originate with Delta, nor do we believe that any personal information that our customers provided to us was used to generate these checks,” according to the notice at Delta’s site.

American Airlines has a “Fraudulent Email Alert” on its news page. The email reportedly looks like it came from American Airlines’ AAdvantage program and offers $50 for answering a survey. Its goal, however, is to attempt to trick consumers into divulging personal information. (Click fraudulent email alert to see an example.)

If you’ve received an email like this, do not click on any links, open any attachments, call any phone numbers listed, or follow any instructions in the email. Instead, American wants you to forward a copy of the email, including the header, to webmaster@aa.com, so they can investigate further. “American Airlines will never ask you to perform security-related changes to your account or send emails to collect user names, passwords, email addresses or other personal information through email or over the phone,” according to the site.
