The votes are in! Silver Planet members have selected Marion Downs as the Silver Star of the Year for 2008. Silver Stars are extraordinary, inspiring seniors who embrace a new view on aging. They live active and meaningful lives on their own terms. Congratulations, Marion!

Marion, 95, pioneered the first hearing screening programs for newborns. As a result of her efforts, 90% of all newborns in America today are screened for hearing loss. The Marion Downs Hearing Center at the University of Colorado Hospital – Anschutz Medical Campus in Aurora, Colorado, was created to honor the legacy of Marion Downs. The Center is recognized worldwide for its unique leadership and progressive innovations in the realm of hearing and deafness.

The upbeat, spirited Dr. Downs—who officially retired decades ago but hasn't really sat back and relaxed—has written a "guide to living to a ripe old age" titled Shut Up and Live! While she offers some of the usual tips—like exercise and laugh more—she also throws out some advice to get off your duff, love and enjoy sex, rebel against your aches and pains, and live out your passions. Her incredible zest for life is shown in her lectures and gold medals won competing in the Senior Olympics well into her 90s. Read Marion's full story, and view Silver Planet's video tribute to her.

A special honorable mention for Mardo Williams, an amazing Silver Star who died at age 95, while finishing his inspirational novel One Last Dance. Congratulations to Mardo's family.

Andora Quinby, a Pennsylvania woman who recently turned 90, also receives an honorable mention. This incredibly motivated senior received her master's degree at age 75 and is the oldest female competing in the International All-Round Weightlifting Association.

Other Silver Stars from 2008 are Faith Ireland, Ray Jenkins, Kyra Petrovskaya Wayne, Harry Rutstein, Eugene Curnow, Mildred Heath, and Itka Zygmuntowicz. All are inspiring individuals who truly embrace a new view on aging

CONGRATULATIONS to Marion and all the Silver Stars!

Silver Planet Awarded $10,000 Rose Foundation Grant to Spur Boomer Involvement

Denver, CO – January 2, 2009.  Silver Planet, www.silverplanet.com, a content and resource-rich website designed to “inform, inspire, and interact” with the 55+ generation as they embrace positive aging, has been awarded a $10,000 matching grant from Rose Community Foundation as part of its Boomers Leading Change initiative.  Through the grant, Silver Planet will leverage its online expertise in supporting the Foundation’s initiative to expand opportunities for those age 55+ in work, service, and learning and thereby strengthen and support their communities.

Silver Planet will use these funds to: 1) link the www.silverplanet.com web site to other web sites that serve the 55+ age group, and 2) to pilot at least three Silver Planet Boomer Network Groups, led by volunteer Silver Ambassadors, in the seven-county Rose Community Foundation Greater Denver service area. The Network Groups will focus on activities of interest to boomers and seniors, provide the participants with local and online resources, and aim to "inform, inspire, and interact" as they become part of the national Silver Planet online community.

About Silver Planet

Silver Planet, LLC is a private Colorado Springs-based company founded in 2007 by 74-year old Florence Klein, a local entrepreneur who developed the site to provide a trusted website to serve the everyday needs of the 55+ community. This online community encourages seniors and baby boomers to adopt the concept of Silver Planet aging---a lifestyle that focuses on living active, fulfilled, informed, and inspiring lives.

About Rose Community Foundation

Rose Community Foundation makes grants to organizations and institutions serving the seven-county Greater Denver community in the areas of Aging, Child and Family Development, Education, Health, and Jewish Life. “These grants are a way for Rose Community Foundation to stimulate creative thinking about ways to engage the baby boom generation in addressing social and economic needs in our community,” said Sheila Bugdanowitz, president and CEO.
