If you’re caring for an older friend or family member, it’s likely you’ve had to take your first steps into the world of Medicare, the federal health insurance program for adults 65 and older. Medicare helps pay for medical and prescription drug costs, but other program benefits are available to your friend or loved one.

An easy-to-read overview of the government program, called Medicare Basics for Caregivers, has been put together by the National Institutes of Health. It’s a primer on medical and hospital benefits, enrollment, billing, prescription drug costs, and home health care and helps caregivers find answers to questions.

“A caregiver who is knowledgeable about Medicare can be an informed advocate for an older loved one who needs to access the benefits the program provides,” Dr. Marie Bernard, deputy director of the National Institute on Aging, said in a press release. “Knowing how Medicare works can help a person make better financial decisions about care.”

The Medicare overview, as with the entire NIHSeniorHealth site, is told via short, easy-to-read segments of information that can be accessed in a number of formats, including various large-print type sizes, open-captioned videos, and an audio version. Many other health topics are covered at the site. The information comes from the booklet Medicare Basics: A Guide for Families and Friends of People with Medicare.
