Silver Star Betty Chinn Wins MLB All-Stars Among Us Award
One of three nominees for the San Francisco Giants
Longtime readers of Silver Planet will remember our 2009 story on Betty Chinn, an advocate for the poor who was chosen as a Silver Star for her 23 years of tireless work to alleviate the suffering of the homeless population in Eureka, California.
About three weeks ago, we told you about her nomination for the San Francisco Giants' MLB® All-Stars Among Us award and asked you to vote for her.
Well, you did it! Your votes just may have put Betty over the top. Major League Baseball®, in conjunction with People magazine, has announced her as the winner of the Giants' All-Stars Among Us award.
Commissioner Bud Selig stated that "Major League Baseball is privileged to recognize this team of 'All-Stars,' whose selfless and tireless work is making a significant impact within communities across the nation. . . ." He invited everyone to tune in for the pre-game ceremonies at the 2010 MLB All-Star Game® on July 13, when People magazine and Major League Baseball will honor the 30 All-Stars Among Us (scheduled for 8 PM EDT on FOX).
Although initially leery of all the publicity, Betty now hopes it will attract attention to the plight of the homeless—and help garner funding to build a community center geared to their needs.
”I feel happy for the homeless because finally they have a voice,” says Chinn.
