Ten Secrets of Managing Your Boomer Career
Take control of your job situation
Secrets 1 - 5
Do you feel as though your career is not exactly what you would like it to be right now? Do you also feel as though you’d better just stick with it and be grateful you even have a job?
There are ways that you can take control of your job situation by just tweaking some things a bit. Little things you may never have thought about but which could actually make a very big difference.
Secret #1: Love what you do! If you don’t feel passionate about your work, you are risking your mental and physical health. Life is too short for that! At the very least, be sure your life outside of your job brings much joy and happiness.
Secret #2: Pretend you are your own boss. Even if you work for a large company, you are in charge of yourself. Even if it's little things, you make decisions for yourself throughout the day. The important part is to pay attention to this and feel your own power and purposefulness.
Secret #3: Be a lifelong learner. When was the last time you learned a new skill? And it doesn’t even need to be job related! Without any learning, you are creating a very stuck position for yourself. The more you learn and keep up with the times, the more marketable you are.
Secret #4: Create ways you can be valued at your job. Are there projects you can take on? Are there things that need to be done that you can complete? Don’t expect others to do this for you—this is an inside job.
Secret #5: Develop a network. Talk to people. Let them know what you are looking for, and ask if they know anyone who may know anyone who may know anyone. That’s networking! Tell them your goals and ask for help. That’s a big three-letter word: A-S-K!
