Synthetic or Bioidentical Hormones—Understand the Difference
Diseases and Conditions
With recent research questioning the value of hormone replacement therapy,
it’s not surprising that many women don’t understand that the term hormone
could refer to a number of different types and formulations.
“Women need to understand the difference between synthetic and bioidentical
hormones to make informed health decisions,” says Marla Ahlgrimm, a registered
pharmacist, CEO of Women’s Health America, and author of The HRT Solution.
“The terms bioidentical or natural can be confusing when
they are used in connection with hormones,” she says. “Bioidentical refers to
the molecules that make up the structure of the hormone. A bioidentical hormone
has a chemical structure that is identical to the hormone naturally produced by
the body.”
Ahlgrimm also notes that a bioidentical hormone does not mean that it is an
organic product purchased in a health food store. Bioidentical hormones are
synthesized in laboratories using pharmaceutical-grade products.
“The important thing for women to remember is that for a hormone to be
considered bioidentical, its structure must replicate exactly the structure of
hormones your body produces,” she says.
According to Ahlgrimm, synthetic hormones may have a structure similar to,
but not exactly the same as, a hormone produced by your body.” These chemical
differences are significant, she says. “A synthetic hormone acts differently in
your body and produces substantially different effects. Bioidentical and
synthetic hormones should not be considered the same or used interchangeably.”
Discuss your hormone needs with your doctor and make an informed decision.
