Near the End, It’s Our Values That Define Us

Stop procrastinating now!

By Deborah Hoskins, JD, CFP

We’ve all heard the cliché that no one on his deathbed wishes he'd spent more time at the office. So what's most important? People at that frontier we all must cross someday say it’s family, friends, forgiveness, reconciliation, and love.

Please don’t think that I’m talking only about the perspective of the aged, the infirm, or those on their deathbeds. Remember the reports on 9/11, the fragments of cell phone calls from hostages in the airplanes and those in the burning Twin Towers? Remember their poignant and urgent need to reach out and communicate love one last time?

The psalmist prays, “Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.” That’s what I want for me and for you. I want us to save ourselves from that final regret, that we didn’t act according to our values. We need clarity and wisdom to define our preeminent values. We then need intention and resolve to move forward. Finally, we need to act. Any break in this critical chain of vision, intention, and deliberate action will cause failure and regret. Procrastination at any point will rob us of contentment when we’ll need it the most, so be kind to your future self and stop procrastinating now!
