Write It and Show It

By Gael Stuart
I am a baby boomer—and a late bloomer—I was a secret poet until I turned fifty! It seems like only yesterday I was in grade school listening to my teacher tell me to always do my best and never give up trying. She was, of course, talking about perseverance, and I have always respected that word. When I began writing poetry, this is what I wrote:

There’s naught
so lovely
as verse,
Whether sweet,
silly,
or terse.
Tho’ my words
go awry
still I must try,
For to quit
would surely
be worse.

How about you? Are you a secret poet? Some remarkable poets persevered in their gift but seldom showed their work to anyone. Emily Dickinson comes to mind. This unique female poet from the 1800s bundled hundreds of unshared poems into a box hidden until after her death. Her work was subsequently published, and she received posthumous fame as one of America’s greatest poets. Since it is no secret that we inspire and lead by example, please do not act on Emily’s example. Rather—if you are a poet—write it and show it.

Write It and Show It

I remember Howdy Doody and I love the nostalgia touch. Yes it is good to know people 50 and over do GREAT things and discover new talents within themselves. Keep it up!

Always keep trying!

I love poetry. I tried to compose poems, but they would not come. I really admire those who can do this. It is great to have the gift. One of the blessings I wish I had but don't.
