A Tale of Two Kitties

Cartoon trivia

By Gael Stuart

Are any kitty lovers among my readers? Although I think of myself as a dog person, I do subscribe to the belief that a home is not a home without a cat. And I am not the first person to allude to the Charles Dickens novel in today’s subject line.

In 1942, a cartoon called A Tale of Two Kitties, featuring an adorable black caricature kitty named Catstello, was released to the public. Tweety Bird himself was introduced to the world in that cartoon, and he duly noted that he “taw a putty tat.” Fast-forward to 2006, and you will find Garfield (a well-known cartoon fat-cat) starring in a full-length animated movie titled A Tail of Two Kitties. There is absolutely no connection between the “tales & tails”; it is just an amusing play on words.

Felix and FigaroMy favorite cats are black or black-and-white tuxedo cats. I have a pair of catnip-sniffing, high-jumping, tail-chasing roommates who answer to Figaro and Felix the Cat. Figaro was the name of the darling puss that appeared in Disney’s Pinocchio, and Felix the Cat was the earliest of all cartoon kitties. He came to life in animation back in 1928. Another beloved black-and-white cartoon kitty is Sylvester, who spit out “sufferin’ succotash” in Mel Blanc’s voice, beginning in 1945.

I have read amazing stories of real-life companion cats bringing healing and peace to the sick and elderly. There is no doubt that a purring cat is a source of pleasure and solace to humans. So—what do you call a cat? Aloof, inscrutable, thankless, naughty, cuddly, discerning, or whimsical? Remember, it has been truthfully said that “there are no ordinary cats” (French novelist Sidonie-Gabrielle Colette).

Cat

(By Gael Stuart)

Methinks there be a pound of purr
for every ounce of Kitty’s fur.

O’ sweet cat, black cat,

tuxedo cat,

aloof cat,
         companion cat,

musical cat,

discerning cat,

fat cat,

cuddly cat,

naughty cat,

handsome cat,

spoiled cat,

elegant cat,

inscrutable cat,

lazy cat,

playful cat,

thankless cat,

lap cat,

whimsical cat:

Doth a surprise lurk in thy eyes?

Wilt thou bring a ballet to brighten

my day?

Or sleep to dream of fishes

and cream?

Beloved cat, who ne’er doth roam,

stay thee hither to make house a home.
