The Silver Sage

Are you ready? Come on along and read some homespun poetry as well as a jot and tittle regarding distinguished poets and their works. Gael offers a positive balance of her own nostalgia notes and poetic meanderings with those of others. [Editor's note: Gael no longer contributes to Silver Planet, but we have made her archived blog entries available as a service to our readers.]

A Smile

By Gael Stuart

If you see someone without a smile, give them yours. So reads a sign in the reception area of the nursing facility where I visit weekly. I believe it is good life-advice. Physiologists tell us it takes more muscles to frown than to smile anyway, so why not spread your grin around? Go ahead, release your endorphins and make yourself and others feel good!

It seems that as I get older I find more and more enjoyment in humorous whimsey and nonsense rhyme. Although I find some poems make me wonder why in the world I didn’t think of this or that curious fact and weave words about it myself, they still tickle my funny bone and produce a smile. Indeed, there is something wonderful to be said for four lines of verse that can create a grin, lead to a smile, and bubble into a full-fledged giggle! Having said that, I would like to share the following:

The Purple Cow
Gelett Burgess (1866-1951)

I never saw a Purple Cow;
I never hope to see one;
But I can tell you, anyhow,
I’d rather see than be One.

He and She
Eugene Fitch Ware (1841-1911)

When I am dead you’ll find it hard,
Said he,
To ever find another man
Like me.
What makes you think, as I suppose
You do,
I’d ever want another man
Like you?

Antigonish
William Hughes Mearns (1875-1965)

As I was going up the stair
I met a man who wasn’t there!
He wasn’t there again today!
I wish, I wish he’d stay away!

Grandma Wears Crocs
The Anonymous Poetry Pen

I’ve got a grandma who rocks,
She gardens while wearing her Crocs.
Her feet look quite mean
In bright vinyl green,
And a notable absence of socks.

Please do smile at someone today.
