Poetry Month

Celebrating poetry and its vital place in American culture

By Gael Stuart

Do you know that April is National Poetry Month?

In 1996, the American Academy of Poets established National Poetry Month to celebrate poetry and its vital place in American culture. The vision was to bring the art of poetry, and an awareness of poetry, poetry readings, and the creative works of living poets, into the spotlight.

April is the perfect spring month to add a book of poems to your personal library—or perhaps to suggest a favorite poem to the Silver Sage.

In researching more about American Poetry Month activities, I discovered that a poetry month was established in Britain in 2000. A national poetry day was also selected and is celebrated on the first Thursday of October. Many poetry festivals are held during the month of October throughout the country.

The British promote the reading and writing of poetry by giving fresh recognition to organizations that promote inspired poetry writing. They hold reading festivals with a different theme and style of poetry receiving honor each year. In London, festive “poetry slams” (poetry-reciting competitions) are held. Poets begin public readings as early as 7:30 a.m. and continue far into the night at a poetry slam—an event that seems appropriately named.

In 1999, Canada established a national poetry month, also held in April. Poetry festivals and writing competitions are convened throughout the nation. Poetry appreciation events are encouraged at all levels in the schools.

Reading up on notable Canadian poets, I found “Best View Yet,” a charming poem from a book titled Growing Old Together: And Other Poems, by Robert W. Nero (1922–2005). It caught my attention when I glanced up to see the Colorado skies dreaming heavy spring snow! I hope you enjoy it.

 Best View Yet

I’ve seen robins before . . .
Who has not?
But like this?
Swept into our yard
on an early April snowstorm
a brave, bold bird
perched out of the wind
on a spruce bough right
outside our window,
golden bill tilted upward
dark eyes gleaming
breast a warm glowing hue
tail feathers as clean as snow,
a bird I’ve never seen.
Spring’s arrival assured.
