Are you ready? Come on along and read some homespun poetry as well as a jot and tittle regarding distinguished poets and their works. Gael offers a positive balance of her own nostalgia notes and poetic meanderings with those of others. As one reader noted in a comment, the Silver Sage tends to go on author “kicks.” It is true.
Along with renewing an acquaintance with the poems of Robert Louis Stevenson, I have been reviewing some of his wonderful books. Treasure Island is my favorite—followed by the Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, the classic novella published in 1886. Since it was first published, dozens of Jekyll-and-Hyde adaptations, and many spoofs and parodies, have centered on its vivid portrayal of a split personality—that is, good vs. evil dwelling within the same person. That particular Stevenson book became an immediate best seller and was quickly adapted for theatre. Most people know what the saying “a Jekyll and Hyde” means!
First published in a magazine, Stevenson’s well-known book Kidnapped, also written in 1886, is classic good reading about a teenager whose villainous uncle has him kidnapped in order to steal his inheritance. The main character, David Balfour, is the young man who falls into the company of rebels, and the story follows his adventurous journey into manhood.
Ah yes, dear reader, if you have never read Stevenson poems or any of these books, by all means dig into them. And for those of us who enjoyed them long ago, let me assure you that a re-read is great fun!
"Requiem," the poem Robert Louis Stevenson (1850–1894) wrote as his own epitaph, is inscribed on a tablet near his grave. He made his full life journey in only 44 years.
