Are you ready? Come on along and read some homespun poetry as well as a jot and tittle regarding distinguished poets and their works. Gael offers a positive balance of her own nostalgia notes and poetic meanderings with those of others. I have just returned home after a short vacation in lovely New England. It is good to get away from computers and telephones, red tail lights and stop-n-go traffic, and visit a different place on the planet.
I live in a state that has beautiful lakes and streams, but I miss the pull of the tide and the wash of coastal breakers, not to mention the scent of the sea. Perhaps that is why I was particularly at peace walking on the sand along the coast of Massachusetts. I watched the seagulls swoop and dive and imagined where they had flown and what they had seen. They were poetic motion against the backdrop of sun, sea, and space.
Like living visual art, I witnessed them glide silently into the sky and return to earth to sit on the wet sand, as if waiting for something very special to happen. My footprints quickly washed away, but the gulls tic-tac-toed a zillion tracks that stayed to mark their kingdom. They strutted along the deserted shore, knowing full well they owned the sand and the sea and the sky.
I was not able to find out much about contemporary poet M. Daedalus except that he is based in Jerusalem, where he writes poetry in several languages.
I hope you enjoy his words about seagulls.

seagulls
M. Daedalus
Rebel waves erase the footprints on the sand,
Challenging all human presence. Motionless, I scrutinize my utopias, Lingering over life as flocks of seagulls, Occasionally gliding smoothly near the ground, Occasionally ascending in a grey tinted sky. One, bolder, comes close to me Flying in an ever converging spiral, It lands within reach and stares at me. In its eyes the hope and tears of the seafarers. Flaps the wings with the power of the eagles, And with a light breeze it takes off, All around just a sterile beach remains. Beyond it, an endless sea of opportunities. |
