Colors

By Gael Stuart

Black and white pictures viewed on a small DuMont TV screen. The Lone Ranger wearing a black mask and riding his white horse as he dodged arrows and tumbleweed against a backdrop of smoky gray prairie scenery. Black and white saddle shoes. Black and white high school year book portraits. Golly, I grew up in a very black and white world!

I’m happy to say life in today’s world is dynamic with the dimension of living color. There are children’s toothbrushes that sparkle with colored lights to encourage them to brush, and shoes that keep you company by flashing when you walk. This column is devoted to a most unique color—the color of delight and emotion expressed in love poems.

Since my teens I have enjoyed poems painted with the colors of love. When I read A Red, Red Rose, I imagine a shade of red so vivid I can touch it. In Threads, I see before me strands of color being woven into a covering that creates happiness. What do you see?

A Red, Red Rose
Robert Burns, Scotland’s Favorite Poet
(1759–1796)

O, my luve’s like a red, red rose
That’s newly sprung in June;
O, my luve’s like the melodie
That’s sweetly played in tune.

As fair thou art, my bonnie lass,
So deep in luve am I;
And I will luve thee still, my dear,
Till a’ the seas gang dry.

Till a’ the seas gang dry, my dear,
And the rocks melt wi the sun;
I will luve thee still, my dear,
While the sands o’ life shall run.

And fare-thee-weel, my only luve!
And fare-thee-weel a while!
And I will come again, my luve,
Though it were ten thousand mile.

Threads
Gael Stuart

I have woven a blanket for you.
It is thick with laughter,
  soft with comfort,
  warm with hugs,
  colored with happiness
  and hemmed in threads of love.
Wrap yourself closely —
  one thread is tied to my heart.

Do poems of love lie unwritten in your heart today?
