Nestle Cookie Dough Recall

The latest food safety scare du jour

By Elaine Magee, MPH, RD
From contaminated spinach to contaminated Nestle Toll House Cookie Dough? That’s right, until further notice, the latest FDA consumer call to action is to dispose of any of the various prepackaged, refrigerated cookie dough products produced by Nestle. As of this writing, the FDA and the CDC are conducting an investigation into reported Escherichia coli (E coli) illnesses that may be related to consumption of raw cookie dough.

What? Did someone just say raw cookie dough? Who hasn’t reached into that tub or tube and eaten a chunk of raw cookie dough? Well, apparently somewhere on these packages it has stated that the dough should not be eaten raw. That’s like taking kids to a swimming pool on a hot day and telling them they have to wait 15 minutes before they can jump in.

The items involved in the voluntary recall include all varieties of refrigerated Nestle Toll House products:

  • Cookie Bar Dough
  • Cookie Dough Tub
  • Cookie Dough Tube
  • Limited Edition Cookie Dough items
  • Seasonal Cookie Dough
  • Ultimates Cookie Bar Dough
Nestle is advising consumers who have purchased these items not to consume them and to return these products to their local grocer for a full refund.

No other Nestle Toll House products are affected, including already baked cookies purchased outside the home, all varieties of Nestle Toll House morsels, chocolate baking bars, or cocoa, and Dreyer’s and Edy’s ice cream products with Nestle Toll House cookie dough ingredients.
