My Family Doctor

A family practitioner for over 25 years, Dr. Hubbard knows the medical world inside and out. Frustrated by managed care and the lack of time doctors were able to spend educating patients, he launched James Hubbard's My Family Doctor: The Magazine That Makes Housecalls, a national magazine written by health care practitioners that is his answer to hurried doctor visits, conflicting medical studies, and complicated treatment options.

Weekly Health Tip: How to Stick to Your Decisions

Announce your plans

By James Hubbard, MD, MPH

Have trouble making decisions and then sticking to them? Reading A User’s Guide to Therapy: What to Expect and How You Can Benefit (by Tamara L. Kaiser, PhD, MSW) might help. Here’s a quote from the book:

Once you announce that you plan to do something, the prospect of doing
it becomes more real. At that point someone other than you is expecting
something. Even if that person doesn’t have a stake in your change, it
makes a difference to know that someone is aware of your plan. It’s a
form of accountability. If you don’t do whatever it is you plan to do,
someone else will know that you didn’t do it.
