What’s the Best Reality Series on TV?

Testing relationships while seeing the world

What’s the best reality series on television? In my opinion, it’s The Amazing Race, a CBS show.

Each week, teams of two (married couples, friends, dating couples, parent/child couples, etc.) are faced with making their way through a foreign country on a limited amount of money, completing tasks related to the country’s culture. For example, in St. Petersburg, Russia, they had to eat a huge amount of caviar. In Phuket, Thailand, they had to have their pictures taken with tigers and perform with elephants at the zoo.

Sometimes the teams must find their clues for the next task in a pile of straw or buried on a beach. One time in Russia they had to figure out the name of a Russian author and spell it correctly in the Cyrillic alphabet. Language sometimes causes problems as the teams try to communicate with local taxi drivers and shopkeepers. Weather can be a huge issue, especially the heat in tropical countries.

The last team to check in on each leg of the race is eliminated, while the first team to reach the final destination wins a million dollars—not a bad sum.

The race brings out both the best and worst in individual contestants and in their relationships. More than one dating couple has decided to call it quits after the experience. However, some people have seen strengths in their partners that had never been visible before. It’s great fun to see if the team you like has what it takes.
