Internet Search Magic

The world at your fingertips

By Carla Hedstrom

Our media specialist went to a conference and returned with some really great tips on using the Internet. I don’t want to be selfish, so I’ll share a few with you.

  • Did you know you can use Google as a calculator? Just type the problem you want solved into the search line and hit search. Voilà! The answer.
  • You can also use Google as a conversion tool. Type in what you want converted, and then hit search. For example, 1800 euros in dollars. Voilà! The answer.
  • Google is also a dictionary. In the search field, type in define: word. Voilà! The definition.
  • If you need a stopwatch, visit http://www.online-stopwatch.com.
  • If you need to record a voice, try http://vocaroo.com.
  • For fun with words put into designs, try http://wordle.net/create.
  • If you are really in a mood to try something new, go to http://www.jingproject.com. At this Web site, you will download an application that allows you to record your voice while manipulating information on the screen. You can video anything on your computer screen. It would be awesome for teaching someone how to do something without the person being at your side. You could demonstrate and explain, and then email it to your student!
