Am I too Old to Run for Office in This Election Year?

By Elinor Miller Greenberg, EdD

Dear Ellie:

I am in my mid-seventies. I have been very active in politics for many years, and am now thinking about running for office again. If I am going to do it in this election year, I must begin as soon as possible. Do you think I’m too old to get elected? Dan

Dear Dan:

This is a big election year, as we all know. There may not be another opportunity soon for new people to run for elective offices. Also, this is the year for mature judgement and experience to be appreciated. I assume that the office you might seek is a local office.

Deadlines for filing and running at the state, congressional district, county, and municipal levels are fast approaching in most states. You must find out immediately about the deadlines, rules, and restrictions of the offices that you are considering. You must also speak directly to the party chair responsible for the office levels you are considering. I recommend that you also talk to other active party people who would know about how much money it will take to mount a campaign for the offices you are considering and what the laws are that govern how you can raise money and from whom.

There’s lots of preliminary work to do that will guide your decision. But, you have no time to waste. You must get going immediately to ensure you are eligible, timely, and prepared to raise money and to campaign.

If all those things work out for you, I say, “Go for it!” This is the year for change. And, this is a great time in your life to offer yourself, your energy, and your time to public service!

Good luck!! Ellie
